Formula Student Germany 2019

3,500 students in 119 teams from 25 nations gathered at the Hockenheimring to secure the most coveted trophy of the year. But not only on the track is something going on, there is also a lot to see next to it. True to the motto “Be smarter, be faster”, there are 24 workshops for the students and many interesting discussions with the event sponsors every year, including our long-standing partners BMW, Siemens, ETAS and ZF.

In the Static Disciplines we were allowed to participate in the final of Engineering Design. Here, the teams have to answer many critical questions from industry judges. It is not only a clear justification of the concepts that is examined, but a good basic knowledge is at least as important. For two and a half hours, the finalists are put through their paces by the judges and in the end there can be only one winner. Finally, we achieved second place in the electric category. After the statics we went on the track. In Acceleration, the acceleration race, there were electrical problems for mythen that prevented us from ranking among the top teams. However, these problems had no major influence on the subsequent skidpad in the electric category, which allowed mythen to drive home a well-deserved third place. The problems for mythen already mentioned in the acceleration showed up again in autocross and unfortunately prevented a start on the following endurance among the top teams. Nevertheless, the team approached the task with hope. “To finish first, first you have to finish.”, is the well known quote. But it shouldn’t be. After half the race distance of the 22 kilometers mythen had enough and broke down.

We are admittedly slightly disappointed that mythen could not finish the endurance race. There it is now time to turn our gaze towards Spain. We are aware of the enormous potential in mythen and will do our best to use every available test minute in one week and to further increase reliability.
